Social work professor collaborates with student on two publications

Last spring, Catherine Marrs Fuchsel began testing her 11-week, Domestic Violence Intervention Model (DVIM) curriculum on groups of women from a community health clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. This spring, her findings are being published in Social Work with Groups.

Marrs Fuchsel, assistant professor of social work, co-authored the article,Exploring a Domestic Violence Intervention Curriculum for Immigrant Mexican Women in a Group Setting: A Pilot Study,” for the scholarly journal Social Work with Groups with Masters of Social Work student Blaire Hysjulien.

This is Hysjulien second peer-reviewed article with Marrs Fuchsel. Their first research collaboration was “Familism, Sexual Abuse, and Domestic Violence among Immigrant Mexican Women” for the quarterly Affilia: Social Work Journal for Women.

“This is great news,” says Marrs Fuchsel. “I am thrilled that our article was accepted for publication, but more importantly, that Blaire will have two publications before she graduates in May.”

Hysjulien has been her research assistant since fall 2011. Their project examines the effectiveness of the DVIM curriculum among immigrant Mexican women.

“We have been collecting group data for almost two years, and are studying a fourth group this spring,” explains Marrs Fuchsel. “Blaire has conducted literature reviews, analyzed data, created tables and a PowerPoint presentation, and developed a poster for a conference. I enjoyed mentoring her in this process.”
