St. Kate’s names new head librarian

Randall Schroeder joins St. Catherine University as the new director of Libraries, Archives and Media this summer.

He will oversee a staff of faculty and administrative librarians, and student employees, plus all activities related to library and academic media services on the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses. These activities include circulation, reference, interlibrary loan, stack maintenance and distance-learning support.

Additionally, Schroeder will serve as St. Kate’s representative on the Cooperating Libraries in Consortium board and to the external library community, including MINITEX and METRONET.

Schroeder comes to St. Kate’s from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, where he was the academic department head for library public services. Prior to Ferris State, he served as the coordinator of information literacy instruction at Wartburg College in Iowa and as a reference library at Augustana College in Illinois.

Schroeder holds a B.A. in communication arts and history from Wartburg College, and an M.A. in library and information science from University of Iowa.

He has published numerous articles in the area of information literacy and assessment. Schroeder is a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Library Science and a veteran reviewer for Library Journal in the areas of modern German history and baseball in American history. (Fun fact: He is a part owner of the Green Bay Packers.)

Schroeder replaces Carol Johnson, who retired in December 2012. Jim Newsome has served as acting director of Libraries, Archives and Media since Johnson’s departure.
