Xcel Energy Foundation underwrites St. Kate's STEM initiative

Xcel Energy Foundation has awarded a grant of $10,000 to the St. Kate's STEM initiative, EcoSTARS.

This marks the second year of consecutive support from the Xcel Energy Foundation for EcoSTARS: Students, Teachers, and Real Science project.

The project’s goal is to increase learning in environmental education for elementary school students, current elementary school teachers and St. Kate’s education majors. The February 2010 issue of the University’s magazine, SCAN, features this project and other St. Kate’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives.

New this year, St. Kate’s students will be trained in one of two Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ curriculums: Project WET that focuses on water resources or Project Learning Tree that focuses on trees. Project leaders are Education Professor Linda Distad and Associate Professor Lori Maxfield. St. Kate's grant writer, Brianne Sampson provided writing and technical support.
