New STEM Executive Director named

Joann Bangs, interim dean of the St. Catherine University School of Business and Professional Studies, announced that education consultant and author Patty Born Selly will lead the National Center for STEM Elementary Education.

She is the author of the 2011 book, “Early Childhood Activities for a Greener Earth,”  and the fall 2013 title, “Connecting: Young Children and Animals.”

Selly has taught science classes for early childhood and elementary students as a teacher-in residence, guest educator and content specialist in a diverse array of settings: nature centers, parks and museums in Minnesota and the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

At the Science Museum of Minnesota, she served as a program instructor for elementary students, and also developed and conducted teacher professional development workshops on science inquiry for young children.  Selly also has been a trainer on national environmental education curricula and has presented workshops on elementary science and environmental education at conferences in Minnesota and nationally.

In 2005, Selly launched the education consulting company, Small Wonders, that provides grantwriting and project management services, as well as teacher education and curriculum development, for public and private schools, faith communities and other organizations seeking to improve science education or integrate it with nature and outdoor learning.

She also consults with organizations and schools on issues related to sustainability and “green” education, natural schoolyards, school gardens and nature play.

She also serves on the board of the Minnesota Children and Nature Connection, a nonprofit with the mission “to build awareness of the developmental, social and emotional health benefits of connecting children and families to nature. “

Selly has also been an adjunct faculty member at Hamline University and Metropolitan State University and developed and taught courses on environmental education, STEM education for young learners, and the developmental implications of nature experiences in childhood.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Metropolitan State University and a Master of Arts in Education and Natural Sciences from Hamline University, where her graduate work examined the value and impacts of natural resource-based citizen science projects.
