On March 17, four graduates of St. Catherine University’s Evening, Weekend and Online Program shared strategies to “Fast Forward Your Career” in Professor Mary Henderson’s “Advanced Management” class. Top on their list: networking.

“Spend time building your network,” said Carrie Maurer ’11, vice president for strategic marketing at OptumHealth (a division of UnitedHealth Group). “I’ve only applied for one job in my life. My work and performance created fans. Stay connected with these fans and they give you references or open doors for you."

Maurer, who majored in business administration and small business and entrepreneurship at St. Kate’s, said networking “doesn’t have to be a three-hour dinner.” You could email or instant message the people you respect or have something in common with, she explained.

The panel included Jessica Dahl ’10, executive administrator, Restaurant Technologies, Inc. (business-to-business sales major); Lisa Palma ’09, senior vice president and chief operating officer, Blackhawk Community Credit Union (marketing and management major); and Angie Christopherson ’09, qualification manager, Seagate Technology (marketing and management major).
