American Journal of Nursing honors associate dean for book

Margaret Dexheimer Pharris, Ph.D., associate dean of nursing in the Henrietta Schmoll School of Health, garnered a Book of the Year Award from the American Journal of Nursing for a book she co-authored.

Community-Based Collaborative Action Research: A Nursing Approach, co-authored by Margaret Dexheimer Pharris and Carol Pillsbury Pavlish, was selected as a Book of the Year for 2011 in the category of Nursing Research.

The book provides a clear framework for an action research process to improve health outcomes and improve health  systems. The text, which is designed for both novice and experienced researchers, is driven by theory and evidence-based practice, and it is rooted in social justice and advocacy.
