Student, staff member honored by Women's Press

A St. Kate's student and a staff member were selected by the Minnesota Women's Press as "Changemakers 2012."

Student Fatuma Mohamed '15 and Development Office staff member Stacy Poirer were honored for their "action to promote greater self-determination, equality and justice for women and girls."

Mohamed was honored for her "Hijab Day" that was designed to challenge assumptions about the headcovering worn by Muslim women. She also was among the winners of the Minnesota Idea Open Challenge in 2012 that recognized unique ways to break down barriers between cultures and faiths.

Poirier and Anne Bertram were honored for their efforts to create more opportunities for women in theater as core founding members of Theatre Unbound, a 13-year old company performing in the Lowry Lab Theater in downtown St. Paul.  Poirier is artistic director and Bertram serves as executive director of Theatre Unbound, which was also honored in September with an Ivey Award for their all-female production of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
