St. Catherine University names new Dean for Enrollment Management
St. Catherine University Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Brian J. Bruess today announced that Daniel J. Thompson will join the University as Dean for Enrollment Management.
He holds more than 20 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, including enrollment management responsibilities at all levels throughout his career.
Thompson joins St. Kate’s from William Mitchell College of Law where he has served as a vice president since 2004. He has also served in leadership positions at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Rochester Community and Technical College, and Century College, White Bear Lake. In addition, he has also held student affairs positions at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Coon Rapids, and Sauk Valley Community College in Illinois.
A Willmar, Minn., native, Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn.; a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University, Ohio; and a juris doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law. He is licensed to practice law in Minnesota and served a federal judicial externship in the chambers of United States Magistrate Judge Arthur J. Boylan.
Thompson will focus on vision and leadership to develop St. Kate’s strategic enrollment management framework as the University responds to an increasingly challenging economic landscape and an intensely competitive higher education environment.
“Dan is exceptionally talented. He has deep family ties to St. Kate's and a soul that connects tightly to our mission,” said Bruess. “Dan differentiated himself on a number of fronts including his vision, leadership style, experience working with senior leadership, and communication skills.“
"I am thrilled to be joining St. Kate's and am looking forward to partnering with the University's exceptionally talented faculty and staff to help carry forward a mission I truly believe in, and have personally benefited from over the course of my life,” said Thompson. “During the search process the people of St. Kate’s and their commitment to students caused my admiration for the University to grow...and that is saying a great deal given the strong feelings I have long had for the University. I am excited to have the opportunity to help St. Kate's continue to thrive and to meet the challenges of the future."
Thompson’s grandmother, mother and sister are St. Catherine alumnae. Eileen Welch Donahue ’26 served as president of the Alumnae Association and chaired numerous large events and fundraising initiatives for St. Kate’s. Thompson’s mother, Colleen Donahue Thompson Michels ’60 was student body president during her senior year and served as president of Ridgewater College, Willmar and Hutchinson, 1999-2004. Eileen Thompson Armitage ’88, owns and operates ETA Tutoring Services for middle and high school students.
Seeking bold results and innovative program development, St. Catherine created the new position of Dean for Enrollment Management and conducted a national search to fill the position.
