A pair of St. Catherine University Master of Business Administration professors were honored with the Bonnie Jean Kelly and Joan Kelly Faculty Excellence Award, the University’s highest faculty honor.

The Bonnie Jean Kelly and Joan Kelly Faculty Excellence Award was endowed to help advance the University's reputation on a national level and is awarded to a faculty member (or members) in recognition of special accomplishments in teaching, scholarship or related academic achievements that bring honor, acclaim or national recognition to the academic reputation of the University. Presented annually since 2006, the award carries a $10,000 cash prize.

Senior Vice President Colleen Hegranes made the presentation to Master of Business Administration Professors Mary U. Henderson and Megan Kalina at Opening Celebration for students, faculty and staff on Sept. 4.

They were honored for their work integrating Catholic Social Teachings into business curriculum that has won national recognition and acclaim from some of the most prestigious Catholic business schools in the nation.

"Professors Henderson and Kalina are working to change the way business is done by helping students become the ethical leaders that are so desperately needed today,” said Hegranes. “Their work is grounded in our mission to develop ethical, reflective and socially responsible leaders, informed by the philosophy of the women’s college and the spirit of our founders.”

Evolving out of Myser Initiative on Catholic Identity faculty workshops, their work integrates Catholic Social Teaching themes into the actions students will take as future business professionals.  Their tool, "The Ethical Evaluator ©", helps students learn how to integrate the themes with their personal values and make decisions when facing an ethical dilemma in business.

Kalina and Henderson were recognized for their work with invitations to present at prestigious national and international Catholic business school conferences, including the Seventh and Eighth International Conferences on Catholic Social Thought and Management Education, held at the University of Notre Dame (2008) and University of Dayton (2012); the Colleagues in Jesuit Business Education Conference at Xavier University (2011); and the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools & Colleagues in Jesuit Business Education at St. Louis University (2013).

"With the attention they have received from the Jesuit business schools, Professors Henderson and Kalina's work with their ethical evaluator is definitely helping us to fulfill our vision, 'To be a leading Catholic University distinguished by its innovative spirit and premier baccalaureate college for women.'”

About the Bonnie Jean Kelly and Joan Kelly Awards

St. Catherine alumna, donor and Centennial 100 honoree, Joan Kelly ’46, honors the memory of her parents and her sister with generous gifts that fund three prestigious programs designed to recognize academic excellence and advance the national visibility of St. Catherine University.
