Wildcats take victory in second day of MIAC Championships
The Wildcats 4x400 relay squad ended a cold, rainy Saturday in style, sprinting to victory in the final event of the MIAC Championships. The quartet of Kelsey Eder '13, Kim Engel '11, Kayla Engel '11, and Erin Coughlin '13 outdueled the teams from Gustavus and St. Ben's to win in 3:57.37, their best time of the season.
The win was especially sweet for seniors Kim and Kayla Engel, who have finished as the runners-up in the 4x400 four times previously during their indoor and outdoor track careers. All four team members earned MIAC All-Conference honors with their victory.
The relay team members picked up plenty of individual points earlier in the day. Kayla Engel placed 4th in the 800, Erin Coughlin was 6th in the 400, and Kim Engel was 8th in the 400.
The cold and rainy weather didn't slow down Kristina Poss '14 in the 5,000m run. She dropped over 20 seconds off her best time, and moved into the Wildcats top ten all-time in the event, with her 19:14.26 clocking.
The Wildcats 4x100 team of Madelin Skaalrud '14, Kim Engel, Brianna Ludtke '12, and Samantha Levercom '12 also had a strong day, placing 5th. A short while later Ludtke wrapped up her stellar first year of competition by placing 7th in the 100m dash.
Senior Jenny Ampe '11 ended her MIAC career by clearing a season best in the pole vault, jumping 3.31m (10' 10.25) to tie for 7th. First-year Sarah Howe '14 showed she'll be a factor in the steeplechase in the next few seasons, placing 10th in 12:18.45.
The Wildcats ended the day with 29.5 team points, in 11th place overall.
