St. Kate's magazine garners four MMPA awards

SCAN, the magazine of St. Catherine University, won four awards at the annual MMPA (Minnesota Magazine and Publishing Association) awards gala Nov. 1. The publication clearly stood out for art direction and photography.

"I particularly want to single out art director Jessica Gallo and managing editor Andy Steiner, both of whom work tirelessly on this project and always bring fresh energy and creativity to the challenge," said Amy Gage, director of marketing and communications and executive editor of the magazine.

"Thanks also to Ann Dugan, our printing consultant from Shapco Printing, which does outstanding work on SCAN, and to staff members Pauline Oo, Sharon Rolenc and Joey Blanchard for their consistently high standards in story concepting, writing, editing and design."

The awards were:

  • Bronze award for overall excellence.
  • Bronze award for best cover for the October 2011 shot of Latifah Kiribedda '12 by freelance photographer Dawn Villella.
  • Silver award for best single-page or single-spread design for "Eco Illustrated," a look at the sustainability practices of the University's food service, which featured photography by  freelancer Richard Fleischman.
  • Silver award for feature design, for the February 2012 cover story "Fashion Forward," about graduates of St. Kate's fashion merchandising and apparel design programs, with photos by Richard Fleischman.

In addition, the University recently unveiled a new digital design for the magazine, which also includes a web-based app to optimize the publication for smart phones.
