Myser Initiative on Catholic Identity lecture Oct. 10
The Myser Initiative on Catholic Identity lecture welcomes nationally recognized Notre Dame professor of law and theology M. Cathleen Kaveny, J.D., Ph.D.
Kaveny, the John P. Murphy Professor of Law and Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, will share her insights on religious liberty in a pluralistic society at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, in The O’Shaughnessy on the St. Paul campus of St. Catherine University.
The Hon. Kathleen Gearin will discuss ideas raised in Kaveny's speech with her following the lecture.
The event is free and open to the public but tickets are required and will be available at The O'Shaughnessy Box Office, 651-690-6700. Tickets issued in April, when her lecture was previously scheduled and cancelled due to severe weather, will also be honored.
A nationally recognized author and lecturer on morality and law, Kaveny discussed with Daily Show host Jon Stewart how Catholic leadership come to decisions around moral issues and shared her thoughts about Pope Francis with the Princeton Alumni Weekly Review in May.
Dr. Kaveny is the author of “Law’s Virtues: Fostering Autonomy and Solidarity in American Society” and the forthcoming “Prophecy without Contempt: An Ethics of Religious Discourse in the Public Square.”
A regular columnist for “Commonweal,” she has also authored more than a hundred articles and essays in both scholarly and popular journals.
Dr. Kaveny is a member of numerous professional societies and has served on a number of editorial boards with concentrations on both law and religion. In January 2013, she was elected to the vice-presidency of the Society of Christian Ethics.
