Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca will bring flamenco dance to The O'Shaughnessy
Northrop Dance and The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University present Women of Substance: Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca, in their Minnesota debut at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012.
In 1993, Soledad Barrio founded Noche Flamenca with her husband, Martin Santangelo, who serves as the artistic director. Noche Flamenca has performed for audiences around the globe, including performances in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Canada, Mexico, and extensively throughout the United States. In 2001, Barrio was awarded a BESSIE (The New York Dance and Performance Awards) for Outstanding Creative Achievement — first to be awarded to a flamenco dancer.
Under the direction of Martín Santangelo, the award-winning Noche Flamenca has become Spain’s most successful touring company. Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is recognized as the most authentic flamenco touring company in the field today. All aspects of flamenco, dance, song, and music, are interrelated and given equal weight in the presentations of Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit within the company — the very heart and soul of flamenco.
On Wednesday, Noche Flamenca will perform a dance entitled "Quebradas" using choreography by Santangelo and Barrio. The term “Quebradas” literally translates into “women turning oneself inside out.” It is also a flamenco dance term that refers to a dance move that only women perform, which requires a woman to perform with her chest off its axis.
At its essence, the piece is about the repression of women, how they find strength within themselves and with each other, independent of men. The piece, which features three women and original music, will be a tribute to all mothers and women.
Tickets range from $18-$31 for adults, and $14-$27 for seniors, students or members of the St. Kate's community, and may include applicable fees. Tickets are available at The O'Shaughnessy Box Office, by phone at 651.690.6700 and online at http://oshaughnessy.stkate.edu.
