For three years running, Shout Out St. Kate’s day has delighted some alumnae and clearly baffled others. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do!” is a common refrain.

Merriam-Webster, the trusty resource for frustrated communicators, provides the answer. The noun “shout-out,” according to the dictionary, is “an expression of greeting or praise that is given to someone in the presence of many people.”

And so it is with Shout Out St. Kate’s Day, to be celebrated this year on Wednesday, February 26. Alumnae and all members of the St. Catherine community are asked to “go public” with their pride about St. Kate’s — to turn the noun “shout-out” into a verb, an action.

Among the many ideas on the Shout Out St. Kate’s website are these:

  • Find other St. Kate’s graduates at your place of work and invite them to lunch. Wear your Katie gear, snap a photo on your smartphone and submit it via the Shout Out e-mail:
  • Wear the Shout Out stickers inserted into the February 2014 issue of SCAN.
  • Buy a Shout Out T-shirt for only $5 through the St. Catherine bookstore and wear it to work out at your favorite gym.
  • Be social! Share a story, a favorite memory or a fact about the University on one of your social media channels. The Shout Out website has a variety of social media tips and ideas.

“We hope to trend or go viral on social media,” says Sharon Rolenc, multimedia and media relations specialist in the Office of Marketing and Communications. She urges alumnae and others to use the hashtag #shoutoutstkates — especially in their posts on Twitter and Instagram.

Not sure what to say or how to post? “Choose the social media platform that you’re most comfortable with,” says Rolenc, “and think about a creative way to use it.” LinkedIn, for example, would be a good place to share a story about another alumna’s professional success. Facebook would be an appropriate channel to share photos of your activities on Shout Out day.

The Shout Out St. Kate's homepage will be hopping on February 26 with social media communiques —photos, videos and written stories or memories — populating the site as they’re posted.

Shout Out St. Kate’s Day is a visibility campaign — an effort to turn the University brand from “strong but quiet” to “vibrant and well known.” For ideas on what to do, where to post or what to share, contact Marketing and Communications at 651.690.6831 or send an e-mail to
