St. Kate's to host STEM seminar for teachers

St. Catherine University welcomes the Minnesota Independent School Forum (MISF), to campus for its annual science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) seminar on August 18th from 8 a.m. -3 p.m.

More than 100 teachers from independent schools across Minnesota attend the seminar that provides innovative ways to maximize STEM technology investments through demonstrations, curriculum showcases and online resources. The event will be held in Coeur de Catherine, the student center and learning commons on the the St. Paul campus.

The National Center for STEM Elementary Education at St. Kate's is the host sponsor and faculty from the mathematics and physics, education, biology and National Center will share their tools and techniques to engage students in STEM subjects.

Exhibits from sponsors will highlight programs and technology that support schools, teachers and classroom learning.  Sponsors include: 3M, Schott Foundation, Beckman Coulter Foundation, Xcel Energy Corporate Citizenship Foundation, CompuNET International, Bitwixt Software Systems , Minnesota Computers for Schools, Sadlier, Texas Instruments, Vernier, Coughlan Companies and Kate Roehl, Lake Region Medical.

Seminar emphasizes taking STEM education to next level

Breakout sessions highlight engineering, math and science for grades 4-12, opportunities to try new hands-on technologies including data collection and exploration using technology from Texas Instruments.

In addition, during the lunch break, the 2011-2012 MISF STEM Mini-Grant Program timeline will be discussed and two schools who were awarded the MISF STEM Professional Development Pilot Project Grants will make presentations about their programs.

A breakout session from the MN Department of Education and SciMathMN will discuss the "Frameworks" for Minnesota’s math and science standards and present information and resources for each of the standards.
