TC and India connection

During her trip to India this summer, Anupama Pasricha, St. Catherine University assistant professor of fashion merchandising and apparel design, visited Jaipur to see Mehera Shaw's workshop and production facility.

The Mehera Shaw design house was founded in Minneapolis in 1999 and specializes in natural fiber/eco-friendly clothing. Items are sold at the Mehera Shaw boutiques in Minneapolis and Jaipur.

“It is such a pleasure to see a fair-trade shop in a geographical location where sweatshops are common,” Pasricha says. “The company clearly follows fair labor standards and is transparent about it. The employees get wages throughout the year unlike most other places where they are employed on a job basis, and they may not have a source of income throughout the year.”

Last winter, Pasricha invited Mehera Shaw owner and designer Shari Keller to speak about responsible sourcing in a Technical Garment class.

Guests are frequently invited to St. Kate’s fashion and apparel courses to share information about fair trade and social responsibility.
