Xcel Foundation provides support for STEM education
Xcel Energy Foundation has awarded a grant of $10,000 to EcoSTARS, an initiative of the National Center for STEM Elementary Education at St. Catherine University.
This marks the third year of consecutive support from the Xcel Energy Foundation for EcoSTARS.
A partnership between elementary and middle schools and St. Catherine University, EcoSTARS was designed to increase student learning and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects — by helping educators develop new techniques to teach science and integrate environmental education across the curriculum.
St. Kate’s faculty train and mentor elementary education majors, plus partner with school teachers to conduct STEM investigations and create fieldwork experiences for elementary students. The EcoSTARS program provides a valuable classroom experience in science for St. Kate’s teachers-in-training before their student teaching assignment.
Curriculum is drawn from GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment), Project Learning Tree (PLT) and Project WET (Water Education for Teachers).
